Leona Thrift-ola

Hello! My name is Leona and of course my surname isn’t Thrift-ola but it kinda stuck after I briefly ran my own online vintage emporium under that name in 2013. My first ever proper business card said ‘Leona Baker / Designer-Maker’ so I guess I have a thing for rhyming names! I started making and selling jewellery in 2002 at Portobello Market when I was working as an assistant fashion stylist – touring with Steps pushed me over the edge and it was time to go solo! I loved buying up super kitsch deadstock vintage jewellery and breaking it all apart and making my own pieces. In one crazy month I had a feature in Nylon and Topshop bought my whole collection which spurred me on to start a proper brand and when put on the spot by a fashion assistant from The Face I said it was called Lady Luck Rules OK!

Fast forward through a rollercoaster 15 years of launching an e-commerce website before the days of Etsy, running my own independent shop in Shoreditch called Superette, wholesaling my jewellery to over 250 stores, travelling Europe sourcing vintage to sell and discovering subscription boxes! I briefly peeked into the world of the 9-5 as a marketing manager for a vintage brand but clashed with the patriarchal owner and hopped on my bike one afternoon and never went back. Oops!

The biggest challenge I’ve faced during this time is on the 8th July 2016 I became a Mum. Wow. I still haven’t processed that one but together Lola and I are learning and figuring it all out day by day. Right at this very moment I’m back working in my office in our new home in Sunny Margate. I’m still as passionate as ever about independent design, supporting sisterhood and running an online business. Cannot WAIT to launch the new website – it’s gonna be the best yet!

Lucky Dip Club

Lucky Dip Club launched in May 2014 and for three super fun years we sent a surprise bundle of 5 exclusive items to our thousands of subscribers each and every month. Over the years boxes included personalised jewellery, enamel pins, DIY kits, homewares, socks, accessories, charm bracelets and our in-house indie publication Girl Planet. Every single item was designed and produced exclusively for each box in collaboration with our fave artists and these goodies can’t be purchased anywhere else.

Early 2017, I decided to pause subscriptions for a few months to catch my breath and spend some time with my new baby Lola. It also gave me the opportunity to have a really good think about the business and work out what we could change to make it even better. What struck me most was the incredible community Lucky Dip Club had attracted which spurred me on to create a closed Facebook group so we could collectively get our heads together and shape the future of the club.

At this moment in time, I’m still working away on a new website, blog, THREE new boxes and lots of super fun ways to nurture our fantastic community. We should be ready to re-launch in early July. Woohoo!
